Time Management for Entrepreneurs

When we efficiently tackle life’s responsibilities—professional duties, parenting to-do’s, domestic chores, the list goes on!—we create space for life’s most fulfilling, rewarding moments. Yes, time management is important for everyone. But for entrepreneurs, who so often wear a number of hats and work under immense pressure as they launch and run their businesses, time management is crucial. Today we’re sharing five time management strategies geared toward all of you entrepreneurs out there.

  1. Start simple. Getting one straightforward to-do knocked off of the list will kickstart your motivation and set you up for a productive day.

  2. Block your time. Schedule tasks for specific blocks of time during the day and then add them to your calendar. The more you block your time, the more adept you’ll become at planning a workday that’s both realistic and appropriately ambitious.

  3. Address distractions with discipline. Email inboxes, text messages, incoming calls, and social media can so easily pull us away from the task at hand. Create accountability around these distractions. Turn off news and social media notifications on your phone and computer. Try a 30-minute focus / 5-minute break pattern. Or block out 15-20 minutes each hour to manage calls and emails.

  4. Plan for tomorrow. At the end of each day, make a detailed, realistic list of tasks to accomplish tomorrow. No more next-day overwhelm and no more early morning floundering about where to start! You’ll be ready to jump right in.

  5. Be careful about burnout. Distractedness, boredom, and inefficiency are tell-tale signs of burnout. Try to keep your evenings work-free and disconnect on the weekends when you can. Tend to your well-being through regular exercise, nutritious meals, and activities that bring you joy and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night. When you take care of yourself, you will be more productive at work—and happier and healthier for it!
