Long-Term Effects of COVID-19 on Mental Health: Coping Strategies for 2024 and Beyond

BE WELL

Since emerging from the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic, lingering mental health repercussions have been evident throughout our communities. It was a global crisis that dramatically altered our daily routines and, for many of us, it left a lasting impact on our mental well-being. In fact, there has been a significant uptick in anxiety, depression, and stress levels reported since the pandemic and it’s important that we address these ongoing mental health challenges as we step into 2024.

Assessing the Impact

The pandemic’s long-term effects on mental health have been varied and far-reaching. Many of us faced isolation, the loss of loved ones, economic instability, and a persistent fear of illness, and these all contributed to a global mental health crisis. Studies have shown that psychological distress has increased across all communities, and that frontline workers and young adults have been particularly affected.

Recovery Strategies

It’s going to require a multifaceted approach to recover from the mental health impacts of the pandemic. Here are a few strategies that can be adopted by both individuals and communities alike:

  • Restoring a Sense of Routine: Creating a daily routine can restore a sense of normalcy and control.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation: Engaging in practices like meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises can significantly reduce stress levels.
  • Community Engagement: Participating in community activities can help rebuild the connections many of us lost during the lockdowns.

Seeking Professional Help and Therapy

Seeking professional help has become more important than ever. As a licensed therapist, I have seen first-hand how vital our tools are in helping individuals process their experiences and develop coping strategies. Teletherapy, which became a staple during the pandemic, remains a valuable resource for those seeking support. It is crucial to normalize and encourage discussions about seeking mental health support in workplaces, schools, and within families.

Building Resilience

Building resilience is all about developing your capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. There are a variety of ways to build resilience and I’m sharing a few of those here:

  • Educate Yourself and Others: Being informed about topics surrounding mental health and wellness can empower you and those around you.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Achievable goals can provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
  • Stay Physically Active: Physical activity is known to boost mood and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Engaging Support Systems

Support systems are essential in the mental health recovery process. Whether it’s family, friends, professional networks, or online communities, having someone to talk to can help alleviate feelings of isolation and offer emotional comfort. If you feel like you’re struggling to find a strong personal network, there are a number of organizations that provide support groups and helplines available to help.

Our journey towards mental health recovery is both a personal and collective one as we navigate the post-pandemic landscape. By understanding the impacts, embracing comprehensive recovery strategies, seeking professional help, building resilience, and leveraging support systems, we can emerge stronger and more connected than ever.
