Self-Love Practices Based on Your Love Language

Imagine if you were in a relationship with yourself – do you treat yourself well on a daily basis? Is your mind kind to your body and soul? The five love languages – words of affirmation, physical touch, quality time, gifts, and acts of service, are typically seen as the way we are loved by others, but they can also apply to the ways we love ourselves. 

For only when we are truly aligned with our own beautiful and unique spirit, can we completely and authentically give and receive real love. Adding self-love practices based on your love language into your daily life is such a profound healing modality.

If you aren’t sure what your love language is – think about what makes you feel the most loved by others. Is it when they ensure to spend quality time with you doing something together? Is it when they do something to make you feel special? Is it when they tell you how much you mean to them? Once you discover your own love language, read on to uncover how you can apply those same practices to your self-love regimen. XO Nina

Physical Touch

  • Stretch your muscles and give yourself a massage with a foam roller for ultimate relaxation.
  • Release toxins by taking a hot bath with Epsom salts. The heat loosens tight muscles / connective tissue and promotes blood flow.
  • Moisturize your skin with lotions or oils. Prioritize skincare, hair care, etc.
  • Give yourself a spa treatment: manicure, pedicure, facial, deep conditioning treatment, etc. Know you are worth extraordinary care.
  • Practice breath work with your hands on your heart and stomach.

Quality Time

  • Meditate to practice mindfulness and bring yourself back to the present moment.
  • Make time for your hobbies, or pick up a new hobby you’ve always wanted to try. Ensure you are spending your free time doing something you love doing, just because you love doing it. 
  • Take yourself on a date, whether it be to the movies, a restaurant, or your favorite store.
  • Prioritize sleep and exercise for a healthy body and mind. 
  • Protect your time in order to protect your peace.

Words of Affirmation

  • Write down your favorite character traits, strengths, and accomplishments. Write them on sticky notes, so you can always see them as a reminder. 
  • Write down compliments others share about you. Document them all in one place so you can come back to it.
  • Speak kind words to yourself while you gaze at yourself in the mirror.
  • Practice daily mantras and self-affirmations. The way we talk to ourselves has more implications on our cognitive processes than we think they do.
  • Write “love letters” to yourself or journal. 
  • More positive self-talk; less inner criticism. 

Gifts

  • Joyce Marter, LCPC, recommends: “buy only what you love.”
  • Buy yourself some flowers.
  • Splurge on something you have been wanting for a long time.
  • Take trips to places you have always wanted to go to, and treat yourself with souvenirs. 
  • Invest in yourself, whether it means your education, your career, or something you are passionate about.

Acts of Service

  • Meal prep healthy meals, so you can save time throughout the week and nourish your body.
  • Create an organized, clean, and aesthetically pleasing home environment for yourself.
  • Get ready and wear your favorite outfit, even if you don’t have anywhere to go.
  • Declutter the messy areas in your home that you have been meaning to organize. 
  • Invest in things that make your life easier.
